D9L is too much!

Kiewit asked if I could move a D9 and I said yes. This one was an
older model that is 20K heavier than todays model. The trailer didn't
have enough clearance to get over the slightest irregular ground.

Modern Shell Game

Can you guess which piece of pipe is actually a condo for a homeless
man.

I was unloading a machine right under this bridge when a car pulled
up and dropped a guy, his cardboard and duffle. Then he walked over
to a pipe to set up the cardboard on each end. It was actually a
decent shelter and could be quite cozy as bivouacs go. I approached
with a loud "Hello the camp"! No response. I left a fiver on a rock
and asked him to keep an eye on things for us. When I came back to
reload the machine a couple days later, he was hanging around watching
and waving hello.

No country for old men

These are the I-70 bridges over Utah's Eagle Canyon. We may be hauling
concrete panels to replace the bridge decks for Granite Const. Thirty
six years ago I worked on this freeway and I wondered how to get to
the bottom of this canyon. A guide took us on a fifty mile loop on
four wheelers and then I got this nice surprise. The bridges are made
of Corten steel that forms a barrier of surface rust and preserves the
inner steel free of corrosion. That saves money in the long run
because they don't need paint. Up the wash is an old cowboy cabin made
of logs that had grown in a spiral shape because they are always
turning to move to the light.

The view at the Trucking Assoc. Convention

What's a nice truck like this doing in a paint job like that?

Bear in the woods

We leech off of people with spotting scopes and tripods for the best
wildlife viewing time in the year. Bears are coming out if
hybernation, baby bison known as 'little red dogs' are around too. I
thought we would see a big crop of buff calves but we only saw about 4
with over 500 buffalo. They must be tasty morsels for the wolves and
bears.

Broke down again.

Every trip seems to have a project. Vinny got out for a potty stop and
informed us the licencse plate was dangling by a participle. It had
the wrong screws and so we stopped in Blackfoot at a Checker and
bought the metric machine screws and made new holes with my Leatherman
and were ready to hit the road again.
